Speaker:

On this episode of Hip Hop Movie Club, we explore the 2013 documentary, The Great Hip Hop

Hoax, which details the rise and fall of the Scottish hip hop duo, Silibil and Brains, who

2

:

duped many in order to get a record deal.

3

:

Let's get right into this one.

4

:

I...right off the bat.

5

:

I have some issues with this one.

6

:

Scottish friends, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, they team up, become a rap duo.

7

:

And just to get rejected, come back.

8

:

And then the light bulb idea went off.

9

:

Let's pretend that we're American and have developed an American accent and just.

10

:

go all in on that character.

11

:

So it worked in terms of them getting hooked up with Sony UK down the line.

12

:

Yeah, I was like, what in the Scotland's most wanted?

13

:

Yeah

14

:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

15

:

Yeah

16

:

This is the dumbest idea ever.

17

:

This is destined to fail.

18

:

Of course it failed.

19

:

Like, c’mon guys.

20

:

Yes, this was definitely Scotland's most wanted.

21

:

Arbroath's most wanted.

22

:

Oh, it's funny.

23

:

Yeah, man.

24

:

It's like, what the heck?

25

:

It just goes to show that every time you build something on a lie, you have to add more

lies for it to keep sticking and it never works.

26

:

I mean, was to the point that they were into that American accent that became their

persona and they didn't even want to talk to their mothers at some point.

27

:

One of the guys was like, I'm not going to talk to my mom because then I'm going to speak

in this accent.

28

:

She doesn't understand.

29

:

And then I'm to slip it into my Scottish accent.

30

:

And it, yeah, you're right.

31

:

It just snowballs.

32

:

And then you can't keep up with the lies.

33

:

But we were talking before, I don't even believe they needed to continue with the lie.

34

:

Okay.

35

:

So they cheated, they short-circuited to get the record deal.

36

:

At some point.

37

:

maybe they can come clean.

38

:

I'm like, wow, these are dudes.

39

:

This is unique.

40

:

These are guys from Scotland, but they sound American.

41

:

These are guys from Scotland, but they sound American.

42

:

But one of the big downfalls was they lied about being tight with D12, know, which

Eminem's crew and then

43

:

It's just so happy.

44

:

You know, they had told their producer or the manager that, and all of a sudden they're

like, Hey, D12 is coming to London.

45

:

You know, you guys will open up for them and here's your boys.

46

:

Here's your boys.

47

:

And then he goes up to him and like, he's pretending like, Hey, what's up?

48

:

How you doing?

49

:

And they're showing the cartoon version of D12.

50

:

just like, who are you?

51

:

it's like, it's funny as they were showing, like, he's like, yeah, they kind of went up to

the news kind of took me back to that whole scene in brown sugar is like, Hey, hey, hey.

52

:

Yeah.

53

:

Who would you say is a bigger fraud, these guys or like Vanilla Ice who got so much heat

for being a poser?

54

:

I mean, Vanilla Ice sold tons of records.

55

:

Like his album may have went platinum.

56

:

I don't know.

57

:

I didn't look it up, but like he was super popular.

58

:

People didn't like his style because it was almost like misappropriation.

59

:

And he lied about his origin story as well.

60

:

And of course the whole thing with under pressure Queen and David Bowie, all that set of

stuff.

61

:

But, you know, there was a lot not to like about him, but at least he put out an album

that was successful and it still gets airplay today and people dance to it.

62

:

And he kind of turned his life around.

63

:

I he was he's on his home improvement shows now.

64

:

made the most of his success, I guess.

65

:

Y'all could have been happy, authentic, rapping to Y'all Scottish accent, Just actually

doing some local stuff.

66

:

Completely sane, completely happy.

67

:

Y'all blew through some money.

68

:

Y'all didn't really get paid.

69

:

Y'all just kind of burned through money.

70

:

You didn't get paid.

71

:

You just burned through advance money.

72

:

picture Willy Wonka.

73

:

Black and white, black and white.

74

:

You get nothing.

75

:

You lose.

76

:

Good day.

77

:

Makes for a good cautionary tale.

78

:

Are you going to trade in your integrity?

79

:

uh How much do you love it?

80

:

How much do you want this dream?

81

:

To thine own self be true.

82

:

Mm-hmm.

83

:

stay authentic to yourself no matter what.

84

:

Yeah.

85

:

I want to go around and rate this documentary.

86

:

All right.

87

:

So.

88

:

Boogie, for the great hip hop hoax, would you bring that funky flick back or leave it in

the vault?

89

:

um tough one.

90

:

Cause I do like the cautionary aspect of it, but I can kind of do without watching it

again.

91

:

So I'm going to leave it in the vault.

92

:

Okay, Dyno Wright, the great hip-hop hoax bring that funky flick back or leave it in the

vault

93

:

I'm gonna bring this funky flick back.

94

:

I enjoyed this documentary part.

95

:

I didn't enjoy the rapper so much, but the film itself was worth watching.

96

:

That surprised me ah for myself.

97

:

I will leave.

98

:

think the actual film was good.

99

:

The rapping wasn't so good.

100

:

These guys are punchable faces, guys, but the filmmaking itself was good.

101

:

I learned and provided a kind of full picture of what happened.

102

:

And for myself, I will leave this one in the vault.

103

:

I didn't really enjoy the story itself, but yeah, filmography is fine, but I think I'd use

my time elsewhere.
